Some basic reasoning behind purchasing a PDA
Hey, is that one of those PDA things? That thing got Pacman?" Boy, I hear that a lot! Let me make it very clear that a PDA is more than a glorified Gameboy. You can take notes, look up a phone number, write and send and email and so much more. Alright, I do have Pacman (and about 30 other games!), but you're missing the point.
By definition, PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant. PDAs are pocket-sized electronic organizers. You'll also hear the names Pocket PC, Handheld Organizer, or Palms. Pocket PCs are typically PDAs that use the Windows CE Operating System. 'Palms' are PDAs that run on the Palm Operating System. Other PDAs use their own proprietary OS, such as the RIM Blackberry.
Some of the advantages in having a PDA are the standard and nonstandard application available to install:
1. Schedule - Usually this is most used application of the organizer. Input meetings, appointments, or even sync to your Outlook schedule.
2. Memo Pad - Just like "post-its" - without the glue...
3. Pocket PC / Palm Microsoft Office - Have you ever went out to a meeting and got frustrated from the fact that you didn't have some of the documents with you? Contact lists? Things you put on your "to do" list you forgot? If your PDA has the PDA Microsoft Office version you'll be able to sync your needed documents / mails / to do list / schedule and a whole lot more to your PDA...
4. GPS (not standard) - Some of the more expensive PDAs offer the option (or come standard with) of installing a GPS element that can pin point your position anywhere in the world, and usually offers also a road map. Think about it: to drive your car and be able to reach anyplace with out having to pull down the window and ask for direction! To never get lost again!
5. Phone - If your PDA is connected to the Internet using a wireless or blue tooth connection you'll be able to use VoIP phones or instant messengers to keep your self online with the world (rather then sinking in a game of pocket DOOM...)
If you've ever jotted a note on a napkin, carried a planner, then a PDA is for you. Most PDAs today have enough memory space for you to add media to it (MP3, Video Clips, etc...). There are also thousands of games available to download and software to carry your pictures...
The learning curve for most people using a PDA is easier than using a home or office computer.
